The Procedure

The Safe, Painless Treatment for Atrophic Vaginitis

Issues of gynecologic health are commonly seen in post-menopausal women, breast cancer survivors and women who have had a hysterectomy. In the US, as many as 50% of 64 million post-menopausal women suffer from changes to their gynecologic health (U.S. Census 2010), and over 2.8M breast cancer survivors (National Institutes of Health 2011). The drop in estrogen that many women experience menopause or after having a baby may cause a series of problems that have a severe impact on one’s lifestyle and relationships. The lack of estrogen can cause atrophic vaginitis, the lack of nourishment to, and hydration of, the cells of the vaginal mucosa. This results in vaginal dryness, a burning sensation in the vagina, and continual discomfort.

Thanks to the innovative MonaLisa Touch® procedure, atrophic vaginitis can now be prevented and/or resolved in a safe and painless way. Unlike current treatments for vaginal dryness, itching and burning, such as creams that have to be applied daily or expensive oral medications, MonaLisa Touch® offers women an alternative that has:

  • Minimal side effects
  • No down-time
  • Long-lasting results.

Symptoms of Atrophic Vaginitis

Pain During Sexual Intercourse (Dyspareunia)

As an atrophic vagina is thin, fragile and dry/unlubricated, sexual intercourse may be very painful, a condition known as dyspareunia. Dyspareunia can also be caused by pain in the perineal region caused by scarring of the episiotomy or after a laceration from a spontaneous delivery.

Urinary Incontinence

Urinary incontinence is one of the most common feminine problems in women over 35 years of age. Although urinary incontinence is a complex problem that requires careful diagnosis by your doctor, its symptoms are frequently ignored due to the embarrassment and shame.

Vaginal Discomfort

Women suffering from atrpohic veginitis frequently experience vaginal discomfort athat feels like excessive dryness or burining within the vagina.

Laser Therapy for Improved Vaginal Health

MonaLisa Touch® is a vaginal rejuvenation treatment based on a special fractional CO2 laser, specifically created for the vaginal mucosa. MonaLisa Touch® prevents and resolves low levels of estrogen in the vaginal tissue (typically occurring during menopause or after childbirth) by re-activating the production of new collagen in the vaginal mucosa. MonaLisa Touch® is now the most effective non-surgical and non-pharmacological solution for preventing and treating vaginal atrophy and its after-effects, which many women suffer from during menopause and after childbirth.

The MonaLisa Touch® is fast, simple and safe treatment that includes:

  • Three five-minute or less treatments at six-week intervals
  • Non-surgical, requiring no anesthesia
  • Virtually pain free
  • Non-hormonal therapy
  • Typically performed in three appointments over 18 weeks
  • In-office procedure that takes less than five mintues
  • Annual follow-up treatment once a year

Maximum Effectiveness Without Pain or Side Effects

procuredure imageThe CO2 laser gently affects the vaginal walls with a special scanner, which creates micro-lesions that trigger production of new collagen and re-equilibrating the vaginal mucosa. The laser’s action safely and painlessly reactivates and re-establishes the proper function of the relative urogenital structures while also improving the symptoms associated with urinary incontinence.

Complete Tissue Regeneration Starting from the First Treatment

While significant improvements can be seen after the first treatment. The MonaLisa Touch® procedure results in more nourished and hydrated mucosa tissue. The epithelium also becomes thicker, more toned (vaginal tightening) and more elastic. It re-establishes the correct vaginal pH, which helps maintain the vagina’s natural protective barrier and reduces the risk of infection. One simple, fast treatment, without pain, side effects or recovery time, can give the vaginal tissue the tone and elasticity it once had, which can improve your personal relationships and quality of life.

Monalisa before after

The histological images above show the vaginal mucosa before and after the MonaLisa Touch® treatment. The marked change to the epithelium post-treatment is clearly illustrated. (B) The same patient 2 months after a session with the MonaLisa Touch®. The thicker epithelium and shedding of numerous big cells from the free surface, together with the larger diameter of epithelial cells rich in glycogen, demonstrate the restored metabolic trophism and dynamics of the whole epithelium.
